Men's Soccer: Karney Leads Eagles to 5-1 Season-Opening Win over Central Georgia Tech
Ashton Karney scored twice and assisted two teammates as TBC Eagles Men's Soccer won its season opener 5-0 over the visiting Titans of Central Georgia Technical College. Four different Eagles hit nylon, and Dawson Gragg played excellent goal as TBC won its first game of the season.
Karney started the scoring just 7:16 into the match thanks to an assist from Aaron Uribe. Karney took the header pass from Uribe on a corner kick and connected from just inside the goal box to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Karney later scored his second goal of the game in Minute 68 (Jason Campbell assist) after himself assisting Matthew McNicholas in Minute 21. McNicholas secured his first goal as a TBC Eagle when he connected from the right side of the box heading into the first-half break.
Trinity's final two goals came in Minutes 76 and 78 thanks to Marcus Oxendine and Donald Mello. Oxendine shot from the right side up against the end line with little angle but still hit inside the left post with the assist from Karney. Mello took a pass from Christopher Dickey and connected for his first collegiate goal on a hard shot from the top of the box into the left side of the net.
The Titans scored with approximately five minutes remaining, but the Eagles got great defense all afternoon from the trio of Uribe, Ethan McCardle, and Kevin Arita, who made it difficult for the Titans to get off their shots. Central Georgia Tech managed only four total shots (all on goal), and Gragg saved three in a complete-game win.
These two teams will meet again at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 24, at Central Georgia Tech in Macon, Georgia. The Eagles will then play four straight NAIA opponents beginning with Florida College on the road on September 3 and at Warren Wilson College on September 7. The next home games are against Middle Georgia State and Webber International Universities on September 12 and 16, respectively.
